LINING the STREETSThere was a time when Northam Road was identified by its majestic Angsana trees; Peel Avenue and Codrington Avenue by their Royal Palms. Today, except for Peel Avenue and Codrington Avenue, the streets are lined by a hodge-podge of trees. Northam Road, renamed Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah, has lost almost all its angsana. Elsewhere pongamias stand next to neem, andiras are neighbours of broad-leaved mahogany and flame of the forest; even the lowly sea almond put alongside the giant rain tree. True there may be one or two streets struggling for identity like Lengkok Burma, but its unhappy lines of neem trees are cut short by pongamias at one end. To take another example, Brown Road starts off with Bunga Tanjong but ends up with some other trees. Going out of the centre of town Island Glades and Island Park bear witness to a lack of planting policy. The roads are crying out for identity and nurturing. Someone should careLOOK DOWNAfter the tragic case of the jogger who was killed by a falling branch in the Botanical Gardens the MPPP got busy pruning trees. Now that all that has been done the MPPP should look downwards and pay attention to the city's pavements where pot holes long neglected have been dangerously enlarging themselves. There is a danger that lawyers will be busy preparing actions for damages for broken ankles |
