JAZZ DIETER MEYER talked on jazz at the Penang Geman Society recently. Dieter Meyer and his jazz group came to Penang 17 years ago at the invitation of Guerin (George), who was then the hon. secretary of a chess club in Germany. They called themselves the Stade and Dixieland Band, made up of Dieter Meyer, leader, drums, vocal; Otto-Friederich Voelker, cornet, bass arrangements; Hannas Rollate, trombone; Peter Garras, saxophone, clarinet; Lasten Khun, clarinet, tenor saxophone; Klaus Luther, guitar and banjo; Owe Moehring, bass guitar. They played at the Mutiara Hotel, Telok Bahang. Meyer is now in KL, having chosen to come in on the "Malaysia My Second Home" programme . Meyer's long lecture on the historyof jazz, accompanied by playing of records, divided th history into six sections : 1, Negro folklore/Worksong/country blues (Ella Speed); 2, Negro Spirituals (Sister Rosetta Tharpe ); 3, Ragtime (Scott Joplin); 4, Classic Jazz 1917-1932 led by Original Dixieland Jass Band; 5, The Swing Era led by Fats Waller, Be-bop (Dizzie Gillespie and Charlie Parker, New Oelans Revival Jass (George Lewise and his Ragtime Band, Chris Barber's Jazz Band; 6, Cool Jazz - Dave Brubeck Quartet This compares with Andre Hodeir's preference for five periods - primitive, old time, pre-classical, classical and modern Dieter Meyer claimed that the word JAZZ came from the French "Jasmine," though a glance at Wikipedia informs us that the origins of the word is unknown. We thought Louis Armstrong, who spanned Meyer's divisions of jazz, was insufficiently appreciated, for was he not also the singer who influenced a generation of singers most outstanding of them being Billie Holiday? We thought he underplayed the role of Beiderbecke who was once called the Fitzgerald of jazz, an accolade he deserved for was he not the arranger of "In a Mist," a classic of 1927?.# i |
