TO CELEBRATE
Internatioanl Womens Day, Ombak Ombak Arts Studio and the USM Music and
Theatre departments created a contemporary dance Fly Jentayu Fly!
- a dance
depicting the different voices and expressions of a woman's
journey through life in search of herself - a search to create a
metaphoric body of the feminine will, spirit, courage, power by
identifying with a mythological creature. The
performance at the new West Wing of Gurney Plaza attracted a good crowd. ![]() Synopsis: Women working in various places -- office, hair dressing saloon, coffee shop etc. ; tea break, rush home, on the way get molested, reach home - have to take care of husband and family. They also have fun. They age and tell their daughters how they have sacrificed so that the children will have a better life. But do they? ![]() Dancers and singers call on the young jentayu to be independent and fly. Audience participation -- audience asked to write what they wish for women on pieces of paper which are stuck on board and pasted on the body of dancer acting as the mother giving advice. Jentayu made of paper (origami) passed to audience and to dancers. Ritual cyclic music begins and ends the cycle of life of women. |
![]() Choreographed by Aida Redza with Katharine Chua and Mumtaz Backer. Performed by Aida, Katharine, Mumtaz, Ratna Sari, Diana, Reis, Machiko, Sooi Beng, Natasha, Chia-Chia, Ying Ling, Bon Kwun and Su Kheng. Malay drums (geduk); Chinese shigu, indian harmonium, bells and Western cello lent pullsating impulses to the striving of women, to be startlingly interrupted by the different language of a Jimmy Boyle singalong, launching the upward thrust of the bird dragon, rising with the hopes of freedom, of equality. ![]() ![]() |
