The
Living Heritage
Studying their Inheritance
|
![]() |
THE WIDOW has an unexpected guest. Turning away from the
stranger, she bites on a finger. This bloody signal causes a sudden heartache
in her son, who is away in a forest, and he rushes home. Widow and son
are relieved and delighted to discover that the stranger is the boy's uncle
who has brought his father's sword home to present it to him
This story, carved on the wall of the Khoo Kongsi, is one of the many
things which attracted the kids who were attending a course organished
by the Arts Education Working Committee. Guided by professional artists,
the kids of primary school to secondary school age learnt about the endangered
trades, traditional trades as well as the living heritage of Penang

The course of learning & exploring their inheritance resulted in an exhibition.
In one section is a collection of stories told by drawings and sketches of which the story of the widow and her son is one. Other sections tell of the endangered trades like the making of flower garlands, gravestones, beaded Nyonya shoes, joss sticks; all within the inner city. Also studied was the craft of goldsmiths, as well as traditional coffee making. (Penangites are reluctant to forget that blue enamel pot of boiling hot jet black coffee, served to the guest in a cup with four teaspoonfuls of sugar). One section is devoted to sketches and photographs of restored buildings in Love Lane, the result of the children's investigation of restoration work. Another is devoted to rubbings of heritage motifs. The children were encouraged to make cards, wood carvings, and also to design signboards for traditional stalls such as those selling newspapers on the road side, and to create designs for T shirts carrying the themes of the exhibition.# ****************************

| The project was the brainchild of the Arts Education
Working Committee under that highly creative Janet Pillai as co-ordinator,
with support from the Penang Heritage Trust and Pusat Warisan
This resulted in Children of the City, An Exhibition on Heritage, highlighting
traditional trades and the living heritage of Penang.#
