APPENDIX Prince of Wales Island Gazette -A Guide to Southeast Asian contents The Government Gazette Vol. I, No. 4 (Saturday, 22 March 1806) Page 1 * Masthead notice from H.S. Pearson, secretary to Governor, noting that all advertisements appearing under his signature in the Government Gazette will convey official notification of the Board's Orders and Regulations * Proclamation noting that Bills of Sale on Land and Houses shall be null and void unless the vendor or mortgagee of the lands and houses appears before the judge and magistrate within 155 days of the execution of the Bill of Sale and obtains his signature. * Public Sales Notices: 1. By Capt. John Eales, "late commanding the settlement of Balambangan", part of the cargo of the detained ship "Santa Cruz"; 2) By Court and Bone: The frame of a bungalow "at present erected near to Captain Elliott's house" and the associated land. * Notice by C. Tennant that he intends to carry on the business of a Tailor. Lists prices for tailored clothing. * H. Rogers advises sale of horses and buggies on 1 march at his Livery Stables, Pitt St. * Court and Bone advertise sheet music for sale. Page 2 * News: Dispute between sailors on leave and police peons. Given rise to by theft of cloth by peons. * H.C. vessel Albina left for Quedah on Tuesday last. * Wood and Tobacco Farms were put up for public sale last Thursday. The former sold for 220 dollars per month. The latter was not sold. * Body of Malay male with head wounds found on Tuesday at the mouth of the River Soonghy Glugor. * Today at 12 o'clock a ship of 300 tons burthen to be launched at the marine yard of Mr Chiene. | Vol. I, No. 5 (Saturday, 29 March 1806) Page 1 * Proclamation on Bills of Sale as per page 1 of Vol. 1, No. 4. * Notice that Henry Rogers has for sale various types of horses and buggies at his Livery Stable in Pitt St. * Court and Bone offer miscellaneous goods for sale. * Notice that Prince of Wales Island Club will hold its monthly meeting on 1 April at Mr Porter's Tavern. Announcement signed by P. Brown, Acting Secretary of club. * Court and Bone offers wines and spirits for sale. * Price current of goods. Page 2 * Recent Naval promotions * On Saturday last, ship Elizabeth, captained by Peter Falconar arrived in Penang. Had sailed from Rangoon on 14 March. Cargo included sticklac and cutch. * The ship launched last Saturday at Mr Chiene's ship yard named Phillip Dundas. Stuck on slip-way during launch. * Wednesday last, arrived H.C. ship Windham, commanded by Capt Stewart, from China. Had sailed from Malacca on 19 March. Passenger Lt. J. Taylor. * Evening of Wednesday last H.C. Albina returned from Quedah. * Thursday last, H.M. ship Blenheim arrived from China. Commanded by Capt. Bessel. Also arrived were H.C. Ship Exeter, commanded by Henry Meriton, Royal George, commanded by C.B. Gribble; Henry Addington, commanded by John Kirkpatrick; Bombay Ga..., commanded by Archibald Hamilton; Wexford, commanded by W.S. Clarke; Cumberland, commanded by W.W. Farrar and Scaleby Castle, commanded by John Guise, all from China. Passengers of Scaleby Castle were Capt. Colin Mackenzie, Dr Crichton, Lt. John Hill. * Identification of corpse found at Soonghy Glugor noted in previous issue. Name of person Sapieman, who usually went by name of Jeremoody. He hailed from Java but latterly had arrived from Balambangan. * Proceedings of a meeting of the British inhabitants of Prince of Wales Island held on 8 January 1806 following invitation by Governor, to deliberate on how best to perpetuate the memory of Marquis Cornwallis. Mr W.E. Phillips chaired the meeting. Mr. Dickens addressed the meeting and proposed a cenotaph. Committees established -one in India and one in Europe. That in India comprised: John Dickens, William Dick, H.S Pearson, Capt Drummond (Bengal Artillery), David Brown, Thomas Halyburton, James Carnegie, John James Erskine, Capt Ross (Madras Artillery), and Lieut. Huthwaite (Bengal Infantry). Subscribers to the memorial (and amounts subscribed) are detailed. Subscribers included: W.E. Phillips, John Dickens, H.S. Pearson, John Drummond, Thomas Halyburton, James Carnegy, David Brown, John James Erskine, Philip Dundas, John Hope Oliphant, Alexander Guy (?), Thomas Troubridge, James Philip Hobson, George Seton, Patrick Clark, Albert McKrill (?) , Paul Kollner (?), D. Nicoll advises that he has foodstuffs (detailed) for sale. Arrived on H.C. ship Cumberland. * Public sale by Court and Bone on 9 April at house "lately occupied by Lt-Col Eales and directly opposite to the House of John Dickens" the "property of a gentleman about to quit the settlement" (details given: plate, furniture, glassware, books etc,) * Public sale by A Mackerill on 7 April the effects of the Prince of Wales Tavern (detailed). * Notice that Peter James Hart has opened a school in Old Gaol Street for the purpose of teaching children in reading and writing the English language and accounts". * Court and Bone's advertisements for wine and music for sale Page 2 * General Orders by the Governor detailing troop parade for departure of Sir Thomas Troubridge on 31 March. * General Orders by Governor General in Council Fort William (Calcutta). Includes: "Lieutenant Leonard Whitesmith of the 7th Native Regiment, is permitted to proceed to prince of Wales Island to do duty with the troops serving under that presidency, until further orders" * Civil Appointments and Bombay Marine Board appointments in India. * Report on the departure of Sir Thomas Troubridge on board H.M. Ship Blenheim (Captain Beissel), together with H.M. ships Hughes (Captain Ratsay), Harrier (Captain Troubridge), and their departure from harbour on 1 April. On 3 April, H.M. ship Albatross (Captain J.M. Gordon) sailed in convoy with the Mangles (Captain Reid) for Bengal, and Castle of Good Hope (Captain Fulton) for Rangoon. * Report on departure of ships from Calcutta to Europe and passengers. The ship Walpole carried R.T. Farquhar, late Lieutenant Governor of Prince of Wales Island. Page 3 * Short report noting that the Portuguese ships in the harbour had their colours half mast from sunrise to sunset for Good Friday, and that Portuguese ship Princess du Portugal (Captain Caitano Antonio de Campos) had just arrived in harbour from Calcutta, carrying Captain Dawson of the Bengal Establishment, J Douglas of house of Douglas and Wilson, and Mr Kelso. * Report on arrival of the East India Feet in Portsmouth. Total value of cargo about 14 million pounds (details). Extraordinary dated Saturday 5 April 1806 * Notes arrival of ship General Wellesly (Captain Dalrymple) from Madras from where she sailed on 8 March. |

Polly, a brig, sailed from Sooloo on 20 March; Cargo-pepper. Nancy (P. Kincaid), sailed from Calcutta on 11 March, Cargo-gram. Oridor Pereira (Augustino De Sa), sailed from Calcutta on 16 March. 7 April - Abdullah (J Wood), sailed from Pedier on 31 March; Cargo -pepper. 8 April - Success (Stewart), sailed from Malacca on 1 April; Carrying troops. 10 April - Indiana (G. Marques), sailed from Calcutta 21 March. * The ship Success, under captain John Stewart is noted as having brought from Malacca the relieved troops under Ensign Moser. * The arrival in Malacca of the ship Kaudree, under John Williamson, from Minto with a cargo of tin noted, as is arrival in Malacca of ship Charlotte from China.
