Music
PESSOC evening
|
| 2nd Choralffest At PESSOC's CONCERT school choirs showed off what they had learnt at the second music camp from their enthusiastic teachers Dr Chan Cheong-Jan, Lisa Ho, Juliette Lai and Khoo Hooi Lay. Particularly striking was Julliete Lai's arrangement of Getaran Jiwa for the Penang Chinese Girl's High School. The PESSOC Chamber Singers conducted by Khoo Hooi Lay were their usual accomplished selves. During the interval the back room boys deafened us with ill mannered ear-splitting blasts from shots of the music camp which simply ruined the evening. The rousing The Goodbye Jazz, which all choirs combined to sing, was a hearty end to choralffest, even though our ears still stung with hurt inflicted during that appalling interval. Katryna Tan. The harpist Katryna Tan was the welcome guest who performed Boieldieu's Harp Concerto in C with the Penang State Symphony Orchestra. The acoustically unfriendly Dewan hall was clearly not fair to the harpist, crippling the singing of her instrument. The orchestra was next with Debussy's Suite for Orchestra. The evening finished with a flourish with Shimano and his confident group enjoying Bizet's L'Arlesienne suite No 2 for orchestra. Salvation Army The Salvation Army's Perth Fortress Band from Australia delighted audiences with their excellence, proving their reputation to the hilt. The 35 member band was formed in 1892 and came here to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Salvation Army. (The first local corps was formed in Penang). I should add that our local Salvation Army brass band too has performed at invitations and has proved a very good band indeed. It's a pity though that the Australians had to play to a handful gathered round the entrance to Gurney Plaza. They should have performed instead at the Esplanade where a big crowd would have gathered, though not around the old bandstand which has been done away in a fit of barbaric ignorance. ********** |
