Penang Island Draft Structure Plan
THE DRAFT STRUCTURE PLAN ("the Draft") for Penang Island Municipal Council (MPPP) was launched in August. The Draft is said "to serve as a blueprint for the state to realise the objectives of the Vision 2020 by 2010 and to become a developed state in 10 years" DAP's PENANG SECRETARY Wong Hon Wye notices that the over 65's will
increase by 5.5% from 1991 to 2010 making up 10.5% of the population. This
calls for medical and health centres and parks. LOH HENG KEONG, DAP organising
secretary Penang says that the Draft puts forward no new ideas. Jawi
assemblywoman TAN CHENG LIANG's headache is the defilement of Pulau Burung,
threatened with the ignominious fate of being the rubbish dump for Georgetown's
500 metric tons of waste
PENANG HERITAGE TRUST says that if Penang is to retain its leading position
as a tourist destination it must develop other and more novel tourist attractions.
More more physical development is not the answer; certainly not theme parks
or even cable cars. Penang must re-focus itself to stand out. It
is already the de facto centre and main entry point of the IMT-GT. It should
capitalise on this and use the cultural and environmental assets of Sumatra,
south Thailand and north Malaysia in promoting itself as the centre of
cultural and eco-tourism for the whole region. #
