Chapter 5 .  Desertions

IN 1936, the two fascist states, Germany and Italy, supported fascist Franco’s armed opposition to the Popular Front Government of Spain.  On  July 7, 1937 the Japanese created the Marco Polo Bridge incident to invade China and in December occupied Nanking.  In October 1938,  Japan occupied Wuhan and Guangzhou.

In September 1938, Britain, France, Germany and Italy met at Munich where they agreed to give Czechoslovakia to Germany in return for an attack on the Soviet Union.  1938 to 1939 saw the USA and Britain hatching an eastern Munich, plotting to compromise with Japan by giving her China.  They tried to get Chiang Kai Shek to compromise with Japan.  The scheme was for Japan to cease attacks on Chiang Kai Shek’s areas while Chiang Kai Shek would concentrate on attacking the Communist Party’s  Eighth Route Army areas, to use the “Three Clear All” tactics on their areas and those of the New 4th Army.

On June 12, 1939, the KMT, in the killings that became known as the Ping Jiang Tragedy, surrounded the communications centre of the New 4th Army at Anhwei, killing 6 soldiers of the New 4th Army and the 8th Route Army.

At the same time, the British colonial authorities increased their repression,  arresting progressives, revolutionaries, progressive students and banishing them.  Our activists were closely watched and tailed by detectives. Many were frightened and deserted the struggle and shrank into their shells.  At the beginning of 1939, an engine man and party member at  Siputeh,  Hu Bi Zhao, was arrested for possession of leaflets of the Resist the Enemy Association and was banished. After these events Liu Bi Xi, Ah Bao, and Ah Poh of our branch said they could not attend meetings because they had lots of work to do;  we never saw them again. Gou Ching also disappeared and I learnt later that he gad gone back to Tronoh.
Gu Tan Yu also became less and less active,  lying low  in The Tong Aun Charity Association and asked that we not visit him

There remained only me (the secretary, because Hu Tian Bao had been promoted to district secretary),  Lo Tian Ren (organising secretary) and Tan Piao Ling (propaganda secretary).

Gu Tan Yu was disciplined by not being allowed to attend meetings but remained a member.  Liu Pei Hsi, Ah Bao, Ah Po and Gou Ching left the party after being disciplined. Hu Tian Bao, a firm and resolute person, continued to lead our branch and did not flinch in the face of the white terror. He came to Papan and Pusing-Tronoh  once a week to attend the factories branch meetings, to learn how things were and to help us to solve problems. He would say that to take part in the revolution was like being washed by the waves of the sea; it was like in the mine where the dirt was washed away leaving the tin behind. Those who were not washed away were like tin, like gold. “ Stand firm when the waves come. True gold does not fear the fire,” he said.#

(1)    In the 1950s, the Chinese Communist Party’s liaison bureau gave me a copy of his biographical note in which he mentioned me. He was then holding a responsible position in a factory on Wuhan.  I asked that I be allowed to write about his having been a member of the Communist Party in Malaya.
