Suona (Oboe)

Jin Shi Yi

THANKS TO MORE RELAXED immigration procedures, music lovers are now able to hear live the great artistes of China. The latest to visit,  thanks to the humble but enthusiastic North Malaya Chinese Music Society, is the great player of the suona (Oboe) Jin Shi Yi..  Shi Yi proved to be master of suona, bili and two other instruments, one oboe like instrument shaped like a small bull's horn and a mouth piece placed in the mouth,  bending their stubbornness to his genius. Percussionist Wu Siang Yang who performed the same evening, proved to be one endowed with the power of staggering speeds.

Our local artists Lu Mu Chun and Chuang Li Na both from Alor Star proved equal to sharing the evening with the  distinguished visitors: Lu on the flute and Chuang on the zither Both have benefited immensely from their studies in China.  The warm reception of Miss Chuang's version of a ronggeng dance once again demonstrated the Malayan sympathies of the local audience. Her yangqin (zither) infused the rhythms of the dance with a soft charm. Not to be forgotten was the ensemble of 6 young percussionists whose solemn faced "Ducks" with its delicious humour brought the house down. The great  Jin took his place in the body of the orchestra, humbly seated at the rear for the finale, while the lesser star and his percussion took centre stage. It was a thoroughly enjoyable   evening. #
